I wasn't built for goodbyes.
I have given goodbyes many times.
Goodbye after a date.
Goodbye after get-togethers.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye...
But what I am talking about is a real, honest to goodness - "I won't see you for a long time" - goodbye.
Goodbye to my best friend Betsy, when I moved in the sixth grade.
Goodbye to my high school sweetheart as we headed off to college three thousand miles apart.
Goodbye to my friends who did the same.
Goodbye to my missionaries who have left for all around the world.
Goodbye to my white house with black shutters.
Goodbye to my childhood.
Soon enough, goodbye to my adolescence.
But most recently, goodbye to my parents who have moved to New Zealand.
Charles M. Shulz and I think alike.
"Why can't we get all the people together in the world that we really like and then just stay together? I guess that wouldn't work. Someone would leave. Someone always leaves. Then we would have to say good-bye. I hate good-byes. I know what I need. I need more hellos..."
Because I wasn't built for goodbyes.
